Sarah is working at Sparks & Co for a month-long internship. She has a PhD in Physics, Fluid Mechanics, and is now investigating the communication field as a potential career change.
As a Doctor in Sciences, I know how important communication is. During my PhD I tried my best to make my work attractive and meaningful to people, whether they be physicists, technical staff or friends. It was a challenge for me to adapt my speech and means of communication to make my work accessible to everyone. Working as a communication assistant for Sparks & Co is a rewarding experience for me, as I get to learn how much Communication and Dissemination expertise is essential to promote European Projects.
Smart system integration brokerage event
On the 20th of January, I had the opportunity to attend the Brokerage Event Horizon 2020 ICT-03-2016 “SSI – Smart System Integration” in Brussels.
This event was a mean of getting information and networking on the Horizon 2020 Call for proposals on SSI. Information on the Call was provided through long presentations, and participants had a 5-minutes intervention to present proposal ideas and complementary expertise.
Camille Cocaud, Sparks & Co’s CEO, presented how we can create impact for SSI projects through a clear and effective Communication and Dissemination strategy, laid from the proposal stage of such projects.
She presented our services and results, detailing the work process at proposal stage, project evaluation and implementation. The Impact Section we work on with partners for the proposal weights 1/3 of the evaluation total mark, which is significant! Once the European project is won, we create a strong communication strategy, implementing a lot of means to maximise the project’s impact.

What is Smart System Integration?
Smart Systems consist of diverse components: sensors for signal acquisition, elements transmitting the information acquired to the command-and-control unit that take decisions and give instructions, and actuators that perform or trigger the required action. Integrating Smart Systems into daily objects will revolutionize their use. They won’t be only passive objects: they will interact and behave based on what is sensed. SSI will have an impact on so many fields like healthcare, transportation, energy, safety…
Let’s look at the example of Smart Textiles and Clothing. The vision is to create dynamic textile products that sense and react to its environment thanks to the combination of smart materials and integrated computing power. The challenge is to associate new textile fibers, with integration of miniaturized electronics into textile structure and with wireless technologies enabling it to be wearable and communicating with other devices at the same time. Imagine firemen clothing that could measure vital signs like heart-beat or body temperature, and react to protect firemen from dangerous situations or injuries.
Benefits of communication for your SSI project?
Sparks & Co participates in defining the Impacts and adapt messages to the targets (end-user, investors, policy-makers, industry…) in order to communicate and demonstrate the benefits of SSI. An important communication and dissemination strategy will be implemented to have the biggest impact possible to lead to the success of such ambitious projects. SSI projects will have a visual identity, news and breakthroughs will be spread through social media and press relations, the project impact will be monitored and strengthened thanks to communication materials.
The event had a big resonance on social media, reaching almost 30 000 people on Twitter, with a strong community share:
