LinkedIn is a so often called “social network” but should be compared more to a professional network. At the time of the almighty Google and its flow of available information, LinkedIn seems to not be optional anymore. Regardless of all industries, it is the new tool to master and control your personal branding. LinkedIn gives you the power of controlling your professional image and to orientate it the way you want.
Is it for me even if I’m not in the business industry?
The scientific community aren’t used to communicating about their work to everyone. Branding can seem pretty frightening to researchers or PhD students. The truth is that some important and successful projects in research and development would have never been achieved without a strategic approach to branding (as the experts here at Sparks & Co understand very well, see our projects for some examples!).
It is also true with our personal image. Apart from the people you have always been around, without LinkedIn no one else will know about the progress of your work. It also means that without it, you might miss out on collaborations.
Be sure that as soon as your name comes up in a brokerage event¹, or at the beginning of a project your partners will Google you instantly. What they will find then is up to you. You can choose to leave a dull profile with blank spaces and obsolete information about you, or you can control your image by giving a good understanding of who you are, what your skills are and what you’re willing to become.
If your CV reflects what you have done in the past, your LinkedIn profile should reflect who you are presently and where you’re aiming in the future.
How to stand out from the mass?
1.Get yourself a professional picture:
This is not compulsory but I highly recommend it as it show the effort you put into your work. Wear whatever makes you feel confident and exude that strength you want people to see!
2. Make your headline and summary section interesting but brief:
Don’t forget that you have to arouse your “reader’s” attention, not impress them.
3. Use your sector keywords for your content:
When looking for a new partner, either professional or PhD, people won’t type your name. They don’t know you – yet – but what they do know is the skills they’re looking for. If you include those skills to your profile, they’ll find you.
4. Don’t be scared to enlarge your network:
In fact you must enlarge it. LinkedIn only allows you to connect up to your connection’s 3rd tier². By connecting with more people – preferably with same interest as you – you will grow your chances to reach other partners.
5. Update your profile regularly:
Let your connection know about your progress, new skills and strength or even job research. By doing that you will also be more likely to appear in the top of people searches.
All the time and effort you will put into improving your LinkedIn profile will be sure worth it. Boost your online presence, showcase your work and skills, connect with significant professionals and let everyone knows what great changes you are going to make to the world.
